This was going south fast, real fast. What was happening here only happened in fictional stories, but even then there were protocols. Rarely practiced yet serious protocols. "Farkes, shut off the lasers. I want emergency statup of the railgun, now." There was a slight stifled gasp from someone on the bridge. Lighting and support sytems across the entire ship shut off as Farkes brought the oversized coaxial gun online. "Clay," The captain barked. "Authorize release of the firing controls." Clay had been drenched in a cold sweat from lining off the damage control reports throughout the engagement. Now his eyes got real big and his face started twiching. "Confirmed, sir!" He did not hesitate. His hands were steady despite his wild emotions. His authorization code was entered in parallel with the captains and the fire control key was in the console within a few seconds. "Clay, on three." The captain counted and their turned the keys simultaneously. The computer began to speak "GE Model 4 Hypervelocity Railgun firecontrol unlocked. Captain Grayce Mary Corpbell the Third, you are in violation of the Treaty of Realitivistic Weapons established in the year of..." "For the love of God!" The captain spat. "Cray, shut that off." She yelled over the recorded voice. "Nevermind! Farkes, get a solution on that bogey. Fire at full power, full burst. Everything we have until we can't fire anymore." The computerized recording was still spouting its manditory rehteoric. "...discharge of the weapon within the solarsystem will be followed by manditory Court Martial..." The recorded voice was shut off as all available power was shunted into the railgun. The ship shuddered as it hurled hundreds of 10kg masses at the intruder at a fair percent C. The shuddering continued as the telescopes reported the initial impacts. It was the most amazing display of fireworks this side of hell. The dimming filters kicked in automatically to reduce the white, flickering hellglare. The benefit of low mass projectiles is they could carry a large number of them for little expense. The limiting factors on the railgun was energy availability and catastrophic failure. The ship stopped shuddering. The captain looked over at Farkes as Farkes turned to look at her. "Sir, primary, secondary and teritary circuits are bruned out. The railgun is offline." "Captain," Clay's voice wavered slightly "Dispatching repair teams." "Nevermind that..." The captain glanced at her tactical readout and tried to disbelieve the numbers. She turned pale and hissed between clenched teeth "Geoffry. Status of the intruder?" "Status unchanged." Geoffry stared into the readouts, unmoving. "Confirmed." Farkes said. A Yeoman wailed in the background and began to cry "That is impossible! That would have punched a hole through a planet!" There was a grinding sound. Clay was working his teeth against each other, loudly. "Captain, the small bogies are moving off." Geoffry moaned and tried to curl up into a ball. "Incoming." The scopes showed a bright glow growing in intensity from the position of the intruder. It did not move relative to the starfield - it was headed right for them. "Doppler suggests 15 seconds until impact." Farkes reported. "Captain, I just want to say I never thought I would get to shoot that gun." He grinned evilly "It was fun." The captain winked. She flipped on the comm. "This is Captain Corpbell. You have all performaed admirably in the face of impossible odds. Rest easy knowing it took the very fates themselves to stuff us back down the hole. I am proud to be your captain." She pasued for a breath. "First round of drinks are on me when we get to Hell!" She clicked it off and turned to face the comm officer. "Bill, I want modulations on that intruder again. Anything and averything you can give me." Bill worked briefly then nodded at the captain. She flipped on her comm again. "And you! I'll be waiting for you in Hell! Don't think that this is over! There are billions more of us you have yet to meet!" The flare in the scopes was overpowering the cameras, which were shutting off. The sky split open and all that was left was an expanding cloud of ionized atoms.
